Genae Lako

Genae Lako has dedicated much of her professional career to creating and executing strategic communications campaigns that support Indigenous-led conservation and stewardship of lands and waters across North America.
Born in Colorado, Genae was raised internationally – from South Africa, Belize, Nicaragua, and beyond – and has a background in working on issues of sustainable development, food security, and child trafficking. She also has worked extensively to support the Gwich’in Nation and their Iñupiat and Indigenous allies to prevent resource extraction in the Arctic regions of what is now known as Canada and Alaska. She attended the School of International Service at American University in Washington D.C. with a major in Environment and Development and earned a Master of Communications and Digital Media from the University of Washington. Honoured and proud to be contributing to supporting the work of ILI, Genae has been a part of leading the social media and digital communications strategy since 2017.
